Ever wonder about the significance of your everyday moments? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if, like Jimmy Stewart’s character in It’s a Wonderful Life, we could watch from behind the scenes to see what the world would be like if we had never been born? Then we would know for sure whether or not our lives matter. For those of us who are not always sure, we may sometimes think we’ve missed out on the chance to really make a difference. Or maybe we just get caught up doing what we do every day and it doesn’t seem important compared to others. There are many reasons we question our value.

Most of us are pretty sure that that our day is worth noticing when we win the trophy, or the game, or even the spelling bee. But what about all those days spent changing dirty diapers, filling the copier with paper or driving the carpool?

There is a flower called the night blooming cereus. Once a year it blooms at night, the most beautiful blossom you have ever seen. It starts at sunset and takes a couple of hours to open. If you ever get the chance to go to a night blooming cereus party, don’t scoff. It is an amazing thing to watch. And the plant, whose whole year has been spent as an ugly climbing cactus, is transformed in a moment of blooming beauty. We don’t question the value of the plant because its blossoms only show up one night a year. We know that it takes the whole year to make the one spectacular evening.

Here is the hope. Every moment matters because they all add up to the instant when we will blossom. And if we don’t like the way they are adding up, in the next moment we can change things up. Here is the rest of the hope. We don’t have to change our moments by ourselves. There is a God who believes in creating moments of beauty for us. He is waiting for each of us to grab hold of just one moment and begin our new day new. And if we don’t get there today, well, He isn’t discouraged. He already knows how many times it takes to get our attention.
He is the God of every moment and He never tires of creating opportunities for us to experience the beauty of life. Your moments matter and sometimes they blossom when you least expect them to.
